Two screenshots from Udiscs course map directory sum up the standards on current options to play within Australia.
There are several striking features (other than the obvious) about this comparison.
First, that a handful of courses on the greater Brisbane area map are registered as non-permanent courses, either having object baskets or event only baskets.
Secondly, according to quantity and quality ranked courses*, neither Chicago or Milwaukee make the top 10 cities within the US to play disc golf in. Whereas this greater Brisbane area has hosted some or Australia's largest turnout events recently, and there are league days on every weekend, it's without a doubt one of the most popular areas to play within Australia.
These only indicate additional severity of what we lack in available facilities for recreation, and you would ask why any of this is good?
Because it indicates what can happen over time with the right resources and support, and it gives developers lots of proven and existing data to show what is the most successful measures and considerations you can make for the sport.
“Council is committed to supporting opportunities to get involved in low-cost and unstructured sporting activities, and disc golf is a great way to have fun and stretch your legs, without having to pay any fees to be a member of a club,”
Cr Oxley, in response to her support in Melbourne's installment of it's second permanent 9-Hole Course.
Taking the information that has been applied and learnt, and vetting it through our developers, be that government or private, allows us to be more successful each and every step we take to grow Disc Golf. We have to be aware what the sport has previously done for others and what it can do for us as a community, what it generates, and we have to make that clear for those capable of financially supporting it.
Even now, as a player, continuing to travel further than expected to support events, supporting those who are reaching out to develop the sport, and even handing over some of those old discs you never throw to a friend or stranger are the best things right now that can be done to change things for the better.
